Our Guide to Crabbing in Rhyl
Crabbing is the perfect, cheap family holiday activity which is sure to keep children of all ages entertained. Requiring just a crabbing net, bucket and bait, crabbing is both low cost and requires very few skills, being a much easier pastime than traditional fishing.
If you have never been crabbing before and aren’t too sure how to get started, then fear not because the experts at Marine Holiday Park are here to help you. We will not only provide you with all the basics but also highlight the best locations for crabbing in Rhyl and the wider North Wales region.
What Equipment Do I need?
There aren’t too many pieces of equipment that you will need to get hold of in order to partake in crabbing, with the following being the only requirements:
There are two options when it comes to the choice of equipment you will need to actually catch the crabs. One is a fairly conventional fishing line wrapped around a H shaped handle, the other is a circular net. The net option tends to be slightly easier, but a line can be considered to enhance the challenge once you have better understood the basics.
As for the bucket, this should be filled with sea water only. This helps to ensure that the crabs remain safe and don’t automatically attempt to return to the waters you have just retrieved them from. The water in this bucket should ideally be changed every 10 minutes or so to avoid causing asphyxiation amongst your catches.
When it comes to the choice of bait, the general rule is the smellier the better because crabs have a super sense of smell. Traditional options include shellfish such as mussels or cockles, sardines, fish heads or simply some out of date bacon if your stomach can’t quite take the other options.
There are plenty of tackle and bait shops to choose from in the Rhyl region if you aren’t able to source any of the aforementioned options. The majority of these are located on Wellington Road on the way to Marine Lake.
