Best Things to do in Rhyl for Families

22 July 2024

Rhyl is the ultimate British seaside holiday destination, with a wide selection of great attractions and activities. Indeed, the town is about far more than just its famous beach, with there being something that will appeal to all members of the family.

With the advent of the school holidays, we thought we’d take on the task of whittling down the top 5 best things to do in Rhyl for families so that you can ensure that your time in the town is filled with plenty of fun and adventures. So, without further ado, here is number one…

1. SC2 Water Park & Assault Course

If you enjoyed a holiday in Rhyl during the 1990s, you will no doubt remember the fantastic Sun Centre which was home to a fabulous indoor water park. Complete with slides, wave machines and slightly less daunting play areas for smaller children, it was a great destination for a family day out.

However, things move on with the times and in place of the old Sun Centre is the fantastic new SC2 facility which is essentially a massive upgrade on its predecessor. You’ll find the same style of indoor water park activities to take advantage of in addition to an outdoor splash zone, indoor children’s play area and thrilling Ninja assault course which is almost as much fun for the adults as it is for children. Make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.

2. Seaside Day Out

You can’t have a holiday in Rhyl without making at least one venture to its famous beach. Stretching out across roughly 2 miles, Rhyl beach offers soft sands which are perfect for building sandcastles and has a lifeguard service in the event that you opt to take on the choppy waters.

You can even take the four legged members of the family along with you to Rhyl Beach between the months of May and September, with your pooch sure to love the soft sand and miles of open coastline just as much as the rest of the family.

There are also plenty of facilities to take advantage of, with a number of takeaways, bars and cafes offering everything from light bites and ice creams, to traditional Fish & Chips. In fact, why not read our guide to the best fish and chip shops in Rhyl before you go?

3. Visit Marine Lake

Marine Lake is another attraction which offers something for all members of the family. This man made reservoir provides an idyllic setting for a gentle stroll which can be taken around its perimeter. You can enjoy this walk with your dog too with Marine Lake being a popular haunt for pet owners.

As for your offspring, they will love the opportunity to take a ride on the miniature railway which runs around the reservoir during peak season. This miniature steam locomotive will no doubt provide a thrill for all members of the family and is operated by a friendly team of railway enthusiasts.

Another fun family activity which can be enjoyed at Marine Lake is crabbing. Take along your bucket, net, crabbing line and bait and introduce your little ones to the joys of fishing at any time of the year.

4. Take in a Show

Whilst staying in Rhyl, we’d highly recommend checking out the live entertainment at the Rhyl Pavilion theatre. Here you will be able to enjoy an ever changing schedule of shows with everything from performance by historic & modern day music acts and comedians, through to tribute acts and popular murder mystery shows & children’s entertainers.

If you are holidaying in Rhyl during the latter months of the year, then we’d highly recommend booking tickets to the annual pantomime which regularly features famous TV figures and is almost a great source of family friendly entertainment that will delight people of all ages.

5. Take a Stroll

If you are looking for a quiet and beautiful place to take a walk with your dog, kids or solo, then there is nowhere better than the Rhyl Botanical Gardens.

Opened way back in 1877, the Rhyl Botanical Gardens are run by volunteers from the local community. It is these great people who are responsible for maintaining these stunning gardens which are made up of a plethora of beautiful plant life, trees and water features. You can enjoy this stunning scenery on a gentle stroll or take a picnic and make a bit more of a day of it.

Apart from the scenery, the Rhyl Botanical gardens are also home to a bowling green, tennis courts, children’s play area and a fabulous café which is also run by a team of volunteers with the profits made being reinvested into the maintenance and development of the gardens.
