Best Things to Do in North Wales with Toddlers

12 November 2024

If you are looking for a family holiday destination that has plenty of attractions and activities for toddlers, then there is nowhere better than North Wales.

From snuggling cute animals at popular farm parks, to making a splash at famous seaside destinations, there are plenty of things to do in North Wales with toddlers irrespective of their interests or concentration levels.

Ahead of your next trip to Maine Holiday Park, we thought it might be helpful if we were to put together a short list of the best places to visit and things to do in North Wales with toddlers so that you can arrive on your next holiday with a clear idea of what you are going to be doing during your time away.

1. Pili Palas Nature World

Located on Anglesey in Menai Bridge, Pili Palas is a small but wonderful hands-on zoo which is perfect for toddlers and young children. There are all manner of animals here with everything from cute rabbits and goats for petting, through to the slightly less cuddly lizards and bugs.

Animals are split up into separate zones, with indoor and outdoor shelters ensuring that Pili Palas is the ideal all weather attraction. Here you can take a stroll around the enchanting butterfly house, hear the thoughts of the parrots in the bird house, observe the ever curious meerkats or hang out with the friendly goats and donkeys.

It isn’t just about animals though, with Pili Palas also having its own indoor soft play area, choice of outdoor playgrounds and other outdoor attractions including their miniature tractor rides. Pili Palas is unquestionably one of the best places to visit in Wales with toddlers, and if you want to learn more about it then you can head over to our review of the attraction.

2. GreenWood Family Park

GreenWood Family Park is one of the few theme parks in North Wales. Whilst it isn’t anywhere near the scale of Alton Towers or Thorpe Park, it still offers a wide array of rides and attractions, many of which are ideal for toddlers and smaller children.

While the popular Solar Splash Water Slide and Green Dragon Roller Coaster are probably a little too grown up for toddlers, the little green run sleigh ride and moon karts are absolutely ideal. There is also a petting zoo section at GreenWood Family Park where your little ones can meet the resident goats and llamas.

Another reason to love GreenWood Family Park is that it is perhaps the most eco friendly theme park in the UK. Its Green Dragon Roller Coaster is the world’s only people powered coaster, utilising the energy generated by riders as they climb the steps to the ride. Solar Splash Water Slide meanwhile is the only solar powered ride in the UK. All in all, you’ll have no need to worry about your carbon footprint when you spend the day at GreenWood Family Park.

3. Gypsy Wood Park

Gypsy Wood Park is targeted specifically at toddlers and smaller children with a plethora of on-site facilities and activities that will keep them entertained throughout the day.

Located in Bontnewydd near Caernarfon, Gypsy Wood is one of North Wales best kept secrets presenting children with a wonderful array of farm animals, outdoor adventures, miniature railway rides and magical fairy themed characters. Young children will love the musical treehouse and outdoor fairy hunt which makes the most of the beautiful 20 acres of woodland on which the park is set.

Other on-site attractions include their Didi Cars, Quarry digging equipment, trampolines and zip lines. There is also a challenging maze that the whole family can enjoy and a sheltered play area which is one of a number of all-weather activities at the venue.

With so much to see and do on-site, it is unlikely that your children will be able to try everything in one day. If you are a holiday home owner at Marine Holiday Park and returning to stay in the region regularly, you may therefore be interested in buying their season tickets which are available from just £45 per year. Please do be aware though that Gypsy Wood is only open between the months of March and September.

4. SC2

Anyone who enjoyed a family holiday in Rhyl during the 1990s will no doubt remember the fantastic Sunlife Centre on the seafront which was home to one of the best water parks in the country.

While the Sunlife Centre is sadly no more, in its place is an even more thrilling successor in the form of the SC2. Here you will find a similarly wide selection of thrilling slides and flumes, in addition to an outdoor splash pad which is great for children of all ages during the summer months.

While most of the main waterpark is not suitable for small children, there is a separate Piranha Play Zone which is ideal. Also available on-site is an indoor soft play area which together with the Piranha Play Zone will help to ensure that your little ones will be kept entertained for hours at a time..

5. Welsh Mountain Zoo

Located a little over 20 minutes away from Marine Holiday Park by car is what is widely considered to be the best zoo in North Wales. Welsh Mountain Zoo was first opened in 1963 and has subsequently expanded to cover over 37 acres of greenery overlooking the Colwyn Bay coastline.

There are over 80 different species of animals on-site made up of everything from tigers and chimpanzees, through to penguins and sea lions. For smaller children there is now also a farm where kids have the opportunity to see animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and ducks in their own habitat.

Throughout the day visitors can take in a number of talks from the experts which includes much loved feeding sessions with animals such as their sea lions. One of the highlights of the daily schedule is the penguin parade, which really is a must see for anyone who has a soft spot for these charming animals.
