Best Things to do in North Wales in Winter

12 September 2024

If you are planning a trip to North Wales during the winter months, then you will find that there are a wide selection of visitor attractions to take advantage of in the region irrespective of the weather conditions or temperature.

Whether you are looking for ways to entertain the kids or a more adult attraction, you will almost certainly find something in this eclectic region that will suit your desires.

To make the task of planning your next North Wales holiday a little easier, we thought we’d put together a list of the best things to do in North Wales in Winter to save you the time and effort of researching. Without further ado, let’s get to the list…

SC2
If you had a holiday in Rhyl during the 1980s or 1990s, you will no doubt remember the famous Sun Life Centre which was home to one of the best waterparks in the country. While the Sun Life Centre is no more, in its place comes an even better family attraction in the form of SC2.

Complete with thrilling slides, interactive play features and a slightly tamer play area for smaller children, the SC2 waterpark has something for all ages. However, unlike its predecessor it isn’t just a fancy waterpark. The SC2 also has a thrilling Ninja assault course and children’s adventure play area.

There is even a café on-site which serves refreshing beverages, snacks and warming meals so that you can re-energise after all of the activities. What more, it is located just a short walk away from Marine Holiday Park, making it a great car-free day out for any holiday home owners or holiday makers staying at our resort.

Anglesey Sea Zoo
Looking for something that will thrill the adults just as much as it will the children? Then why not head to the indoor Anglesey Sea Zoo.

Located on the south coast of the island in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey Sea Zoo is the largest aquarium in Wales with a native population of over 150 different species of sea life. Here you will see everything from the fairly mundane plaice or sea bass, all the way through to the completely alien looking moon jellyfish and green sea urchin.

Unlike the SC2, the Anglesey Sea Zoo is as educational as it is entertaining with regular talks put on throughout the day with experts who will talk you through the various species that live on-site.

Zip World - Bounce Below
Zip World has been one of the greatest success stories in North Wales over the past decade with the original Penrhyn Quarry site, home to the fastest zip line in the world, now being joined by six other venues within the groups portfolio.

Each of these sites offers something different, which is just as well during the winter months when the zip line will often be ruled out of action. So if you are looking for things to do in North Wales in the winter which fulfils your needs for an adrenaline rush, then you would be best heading to the Zip World site in Llechwedd.

This is home to the famous underground bounce below attraction where children and big kids (i.e. fun loving parents & guardians) can enjoy the trampoline style activity which is protected from the elements outside. Another all-weather attraction available here is the world’s first underground crazy golf course, a great option if you enjoy a little friendly competition.

Penderyn Distillery
On to something a little more adult now, we have the Penderyn Distillery in Llandudno. Here you can enjoy a 1 hour tour of the famous distillery where the award winning Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky is created. You’ll learn exactly what it is that makes their whiskey so unique, exploring the mill, mash tun and innovative copper-pot Penderyn still which all play a vital role in the process.

Alongside the expert tour, you will also be welcome to enjoy a couple of samples at the tasting bar once the tour is complete. Thankfully there is also a store on-site selling the full collection of whiskeys you will have just sampled. This is alongside their range of spirits including gin, vodka and rum, all of which have picked up distinguished industry awards.

While children are welcome to join in on the tour, the distillery asks adults to use their best judgement when deciding whether or not to bring their offspring along on the journey given that the products the factory produces are strictly for over 18s only.

Tweedmill Factory Outlet
If you are a shopaholic but can’t stand the wintery weather conditions, then you need to head to the Tweedmill Factory Outlet in Saint Asaph.

This two story indoor shopping outlet aims to provide you with everything you will need all under one roof. You will find over 300 different famous brand names in store with a wide selection of male and female clothing items, in addition to quality homeware, garden items and even a farm shop where you can sample some of the fresh local produce.

To complete your day, there is also an onsite café which is open from 10am till 4pm daily. The food and drink here is to an exceptionally high standard, featuring many of the items that you will find in the on-site farm shop. With breakfast, lunch and hot beverages available, there is something to keep you going throughout the day.
