Best Things to do in Denbighshire

22 August 2024

One of the many reasons that makes holidaying at Marine Holiday Park special is the wide selection of fantastic activities and places to visit in the surrounding Denbighshire region. In fact, there seems to be something to delight all members of the family irrespective of their age or interests.

For the benefit of the many families who are staying at our resort, we’ve put together a list of the top 5 best things to do in Denbighshire that you should well consider adding to your schedule the next time that you are staying at our Rhyl holiday park.

1. Visit a Castle
North Wales is filled with some of the most visually impressive castles in the UK and some of these are in the Denbighshire region. This includes Gwrych Castle in Abergele which was recently used as the filming location for the UK based series of ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’.

Gwrych Castle is open to the public with guests able to tour this outstanding grade 1 listed building and learn about the lifestyles of those who have inhabited it since its construction in the early 19th century. Perhaps a greater draw may be the chance to tour the areas where ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ was filmed and view a number of props from the show including the famous phone box.

Prefer a castle with a slightly longer history? Then why not head to the nearby Rhuddlan castle which is located just less than 3 miles away from Marine Holiday Park.

2. Head to the Beach
No holiday in Rhyl is complete unless you have visited the famous beach. Depending on the season, this could be a multi-day attraction with kids sure to love building sandcastles, paddling and grabbing a bag or fish and chips from one of the seafront takeaways.

However, Rhyl isn’t the only famous seaside town in the area. Colwyn Bay and Llandudno are two alternative venues if you prefer a change of scenery. As with Rhyl, Colwyn Bay is a quintessential family seaside destination with soft miles of soft sands, takeaway and ice cream kiosks and also plenty of watersports opportunities. The promenade has also recently been renovated and features a number of family focused activity options.

The latter of these two destinations is probably a better place to visit in Denbighshire for some of our more mature holiday makers on account of the shingle beach and glorious walks which are possible along the Llandudno Pier.

3. Go for a Walk
Llandudno is just one of the many locations in North Wales which offer scenic coastal walking routes. Rhyl itself is also home to a long scenic promenade which forms part of the famous North Wales coastal walking route. This incorporates nearby parts of Prestatyn, Towyn and Talacre so can ultimately be as long as you like!

There are also plenty of scenic walking routes to be enjoyed in gorgeous Llangollen. If you do opt to visit Llangollen, then we’d highly recommend making sure that your chosen route incorporates Llangollen Bridge which offers genuinely spectacular views which attract tourists from miles around.

4. Admire the Natural Beauty
Llangollen bridge is unquestionably one North Wales most scenic vantage points. However, there are plenty of others to enjoy in the Denbighshire region. This includes the famous Great Orme in the aforementioned Llandudno.

It’s possible to enjoy the Great Orme without committing to a long walk if that really isn’t your thing. Instead, you can climb aboard one of the few remaining cable operated trams in the UK and ride all the way to the top of the Great Orme and admire the glorious coastal vistas from its summit. Here you will also find The Captain’s Table Café which serves a selection of tasty meals, snacks and beverages.

5. Have an Adventure
If you are concerned that the previous two suggestions might not be enough to keep the kids entertained, then fear not because there is a wide selection of great things to do in Denbighshire with children.

Top of the list has to be the SC2 on Rhyl seafront. This is home to a brilliant waterpark, soft play area and ninja assault course which is sure to keep the kids entertained for hours on end.

Alternatively, you could head to Llangollen and climb aboard the historic Llangollen railway. Here you will have the opportunity to ride aboard a traditional steam locomotive and enjoy a scenic trip through the glorious Welsh countryside. Most journeys last roughly 2 hours in total and provide a proper retro experience which will no doubt delight rail enthusiasts of all ages.
